Pierce & Meryl – The Shy Sibling Duo Who Wrote the Book on “Look, Don’t Touch (Unless You’re Each Other)”

Pierce and Meryl are bonded littermates who arrived together and have decided that life is best experienced from a safe distance—about three to five feet, unless you happen to be their sibling, in which case full-contact wrestling is mandatory.

These two are classic beautiful-mysterious-kids: huge golden eyes, velvet fur, and an aura that says “we might be part night owl.” During the day they nap in an intertwined ball on the highest shelf, occasionally opening one eye to acknowledge your existence. Bring out a toy, though, and the circus begins—but only if they think you’re not watching too closely. A well-timed wand toy or dangly string turns them into tiny panther acrobats: pouncing, flipping, chasing, and play-growling exclusively at each other. It’s the cutest private wrestling match you’ll ever be politely asked to stay out of.

Petting? Technically allowed, emotionally complicated.
- Pierce will sit still and let you stroke him exactly 2.5 times before he remembers personal space is a thing and slowly backs away while giving you tragic orphan eyes.
- Meryl is more dramatic: she’ll tolerate one (1) chin scratch, then give you a deeply offended side-eye as if you’ve just read her diary out loud. Two strokes and she does the slow-motion “I’m melting away from this betrayal” exit.

Picking either of them up? That’s a hard no. They both transform into liquid smoke the moment human arms appear. Ground-level relationships only, please.

They’ve only ever known each other, so they haven’t roamed freely with other cats yet, but when curious noses poke through the condo bars they respond with calm sniffs and zero hissing. Another gentle, respectful cat would probably be fine; another shy playmate would be even better.

Pierce & Meryl are looking for a quiet, adult home with an understanding human who speaks fluent slow-blink and is fluent in “let them come to you.” Give them high perches, plenty of toys they can murder together, and a lifetime supply of patience, and one day you’ll wake up to find one (or both) of them sleeping at the foot of your bed instead of across the room. Progress is measured in inches and months, but oh is it worth it.

If you’ve ever wanted two gorgeous, mysterious shadow-kittens who only truly trust each other (but might, maybe, someday trust you too), come meet Pierce & Meryl. They’ll probably hide on the first visit. By the fifth, they might let you watch them play. By the fiftieth, they’ll own your heart—and still pretend they barely know your name.

Visitors to the shelter are by appointment only and after a form has been submitted online:
