Meet Thomas Jefferson – The Shyest Founding Father with a Heart Waiting to Be Won

Thomas Jefferson is a big, soft, orange-and-white gentleman who would very much like to speak to the manager of Being Perceived. Of the three presidential boys sharing the back kennel (him, John Adams, and George Washington), TJ is the quietest, the most dignified, and the one who has decided humans are highly suspicious until proven otherwise.

He’s not aggressive — never hisses, never swats — he simply turns into an orange loaf in the very back corner and gives you the slowest, most polite “please avert your eyes” blink.” Yet when it came time for flea treatment, he allowed handling with zero fuss, just a deep sigh of “fine, but I’m not happy about it.”

**Current comfort levels (he’s still in the quiet back room, un-vetted):**
- Petting: Not yet — will retreat or freeze
- Picking up: Only when absolutely necessary (he tolerates it like a statesman enduring a boring speech)
- Play: Has been spotted doing tiny cautious pounces on a wand toy when he thinks no one is watching
- Other cats: Gets along perfectly with his two cage-mates and seems comforted by their presence of other felines. A calm, confident kitty friend would probably help him relax faster.

Thomas Jefferson is looking for that rare, patient adopter who understands that some of the very best cats take months — not days — to decide you’re safe. He needs a calm, adult home with at least one friendly resident cat (or one of his founding brothers), a quiet safe room to start in, and someone who celebrates every tiny victory: first head-out-of-the-hide, first slow blink, first brave step into the living room.

One day, the same cat who currently wishes to become invisible will be the one greeting you at the door with chirps, sleeping on your pillow, and purring loud enough to rattle the windows.

He will be neutered, vaccinated, tested for FIV/FeLV and microchipped before going home. If your heart has room for a big orange ghost who just needs time, quiet, and another cat to show him the way, Thomas Jefferson promises that when he finally chooses you, it will be the most loyal, grateful love you’ve ever earned. Bonus points if you adopt him with one or both of his presidential roommates — these three have been each other’s comfort through everything.

Visitors to the shelter are by appointment only and after a form has been submitted online:
